The goal is to get your article as widely distributed as possible. One key to that is, of course, to write a quality article.
The second is to do the submission well.
Article directories are looking for articles. That is what they are there for. But, at the same time, they are not going to spend any length of time editing or thinking about each of the hundreds and thousands of articles that are submitted to them. Anything that is going to take any effort will just be deleted.
So you have to do the thinking for them.
The most important part of this is the category to which the article is submitted. So let me explain how the Wizard does this.
First, when you submit an article, you have to supply some keywords, plus select three entries from those drop down boxes.
On submitting your article to a directory, the Wizard goes through each of your keywords and then each of the drop-down boxes, to find a category on the directory that matches the keywords and categories that you selected.
You want as good a match as possible, and you don't want to submit your article to inappropriate categories (as that will just annoy the directory editor).
So, select your keywords carefully: Start with a specific keyword that best describes your article - eg dalmatian dogs. The wizard will first look to see if there is a category for dalmatian dogs. If it is a niche directory about dogs, there might be. Most likely there won't.
Then add a less specific keyword: dogs. The wizard can only look for what you have entered.
Then keep adding keywords of decreasing specificity: pets, animals, family, hobbies, home
All of those would be reasonable - and a good chance that there would be category to match of course. Whether or not the editor accepts your dog article to his home category is up to them, which is why you aim to be more specific first.
Do not put in: cars, business, health, etc, unless your article is clearly related to those topics.
NOTE that you do not need to put in variations of the word - eg you don't need to put both singular and plural. Also, don't put in a whole bunch of variations of a long-tail keyword phrase. Blogs and Directories don't use long phrases as category headings, so don't put in: "long-haired dalmation dogs with pink noses". Three words is ok. Four words is almost certainly too many.
If your article submissions are not getting the results you want, it is most probably because your keywords are too specific.
Hope that helps!
